Sweden📜 History of Sweden

The story of Sweden

After the Ice Age glaciers retreated, hunter-gatherers moved into what is now Sweden around 12,000 years ago. Farming arrived in the south during the Neolithic, and Bronze Age people left thousands of rock carvings, such as those at Tanum, showing ships, animals and ceremonies. Over time, Germanic tribes such as the Svear and Götar emerged, giving their names to the land.

From the late eighth century, Swedish Vikings travelled east across the Baltic and along Russian rivers, trading and raiding as far as Constantinople and the Caspian Sea. Christianity spread gradually, and the kingdom was consolidated during the Middle Ages. In 1397 Sweden joined Denmark and Norway in the Kalmar Union, but in 1523 Gustav Vasa broke away and became king, founding a strong, independent state and introducing the Lutheran Reformation.

Read the full history

In the seventeenth century Sweden became a major European power, expanding around the Baltic under kings such as Gustavus Adolphus. Its empire declined after defeat in the Great Northern War, and Finland was lost to Russia in 1809. Sweden has avoided war since 1814 and developed into an industrial nation in the late nineteenth century, though many Swedes emigrated to North America. In the twentieth century it built a famous welfare state, remained neutral through the World Wars, and joined the EU in 1995 and NATO in 2024.

Today Sweden is a modern, innovative country known for design, sustainability and outdoor life. Visitors can explore Viking sites, medieval towns like Visby, royal palaces in Stockholm, and vast forests, lakes and Arctic landscapes in Lapland, where the Indigenous Sámi culture continues to thrive.
