Netherlands📜 History of Netherlands

The story of Netherlands

People have lived in the low, watery lands at the mouth of the Rhine for thousands of years, and Neolithic farmers in Drenthe built the great stone tombs known as hunebedden more than five thousand years ago. Later, Frisians and Batavians lived on the coasts and river islands, and the Rhine marked the northern frontier of the Roman Empire. In medieval times, the Franks and Charlemagne ruled the region, while communities began building dikes, draining marshes and forming water boards – some of the oldest democratic institutions in Europe – to win land from the sea.

Prosperous trading towns grew up, and by the 15th and 16th centuries the Low Countries were ruled by the Burgundian dukes and then the Habsburgs. Religious and political tensions with Catholic Spain sparked the Dutch Revolt in 1568, led by William of Orange. After eighty years of conflict, Spain recognised the Dutch Republic in 1648.

Read the full history

The 17th century became the Dutch Golden Age. The Dutch East India Company, founded in 1602, built a global trading network, Amsterdam grew into a world financial centre, and painters such as Rembrandt, Vermeer and Frans Hals created masterpieces. This wealth also came from colonial rule and the slave trade, a darker legacy now openly examined in Dutch museums. After a period of French rule, the Kingdom of the Netherlands was established in 1815. The country stayed neutral in the First World War, but was occupied by Germany from 1940 to 1945 – the period when Anne Frank wrote her famous diary in hiding in Amsterdam. After a devastating flood in 1953, the Dutch built the Delta Works, one of the world's great feats of engineering.

Today the Netherlands is known for tolerance, design and cycling. Visitors can explore UNESCO-listed sites such as Amsterdam's canal ring, the windmills of Kinderdijk and the Wadden Sea, alongside world-class art museums and centuries-old towns.
