The story of Poland
Poland's story begins with Slavic tribes who settled the plains between the Oder and Vistula rivers. In 966 the ruler Mieszko I accepted Christianity, an event seen as the birth of the Polish state. Medieval Poland grew into a significant kingdom, with Kraków as its royal capital, and in the fourteenth century King Casimir the Great built castles and towns and founded one of Europe's oldest universities.
In 1569 Poland and Lithuania united to form the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, one of the largest states in Europe, notable for its religious tolerance and a parliament in which nobles elected their kings. The capital moved to Warsaw around 1596, and in 1791 the Commonwealth adopted one of the world's first modern written constitutions. Yet weakened by internal divisions, it was carved up by Russia, Prussia and Austria in three partitions, and by 1795 Poland had vanished from the map for over a century. Polish culture survived through language, faith and figures such as Chopin and Marie Curie.
Read the full history
Poland regained independence in 1918 after the First World War. In 1939 it was invaded by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, and the Second World War brought immense suffering, including the Holocaust, which destroyed most of the country's large Jewish community, and the near-total destruction of Warsaw. After the war Poland came under communist rule. In 1980 the Solidarity trade union, led by Lech Wałęsa, became a mass peaceful movement, and in 1989 Poland held partly free elections that helped bring down communism across Central Europe.
Since then Poland has transformed into a confident, fast-growing democracy, joining NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. For travellers, this means painstakingly rebuilt old towns, medieval castles, sobering memorial sites such as Auschwitz-Birkenau, and lively cities full of cafés, culture and great food. From the Baltic beaches to the Tatra Mountains, Poland rewards curious visitors with history at every turn.
