United Kingdom📜 History of United Kingdom

The story of United Kingdom

Britain's story begins with Stone Age hunters who crossed a land bridge from Europe, followed by Neolithic farmers who raised mysterious monuments such as Stonehenge and Skara Brae. Celtic-speaking peoples later spread across the islands, and in AD 43 the Romans invaded, building towns, roads, baths and Hadrian's Wall across the north of their province. After Roman rule ended in the early fifth century, Anglo-Saxons settled much of what became England, Viking raiders and settlers followed, and distinct kingdoms took shape in England, Scotland and Wales.

The Norman Conquest of 1066 transformed England, bringing castles, cathedrals and a new ruling class. Over the following centuries Magna Carta limited royal power, Wales was conquered by English kings, and Scotland fought to keep its independence. The Tudor era saw the English Reformation and the flourishing of Shakespeare's theatre, and in 1603 the crowns of England and Scotland were united under James VI and I. A civil war in the 1640s briefly abolished the monarchy, before Parliament's power was confirmed in the late seventeenth century. The Acts of Union in 1707 created the Kingdom of Great Britain, and a union with Ireland followed in 1801.

Read the full history

In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries Britain led the Industrial Revolution and built the largest empire in history, an era that brought vast wealth to some and profound, often painful consequences for colonised peoples. Most of Ireland became independent in the 1920s, leaving Northern Ireland within the United Kingdom. Britain played a central role in both world wars, then founded the National Health Service, and its empire gave way to the Commonwealth of Nations. Devolved parliaments were created for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland in the late 1990s, and the UK left the European Union in 2020.

For travellers, the UK packs extraordinary variety into a small space: prehistoric stone circles, Roman ruins, medieval castles, grand stately homes and world-class museums, many of them free. Multicultural cities hum with theatre, music and food from around the world, while national parks, highlands and dramatic coastlines offer superb walking. Traditions from afternoon tea to Highland games keep its regional identities vividly alive.
