Australia📜 History of Australia

The story of Australia

Australia's story begins with its First Peoples, whose ancestors arrived at least 50,000 years ago and built the oldest continuous living cultures on Earth. Hundreds of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nations, each with its own language and Country, managed the land through fire, seasonal movement and deep knowledge passed on in song, story and art, some of which survives in rock galleries tens of thousands of years old.

European navigators charted parts of the coast from the early 1600s, notably the Dutch, but it was James Cook's 1770 voyage along the east coast that led Britain to claim the land. In 1788 the First Fleet arrived at Sydney Cove to found a penal colony, and convict transportation continued in various colonies for decades. Colonisation brought dispossession, disease and conflict for Aboriginal peoples, a history the country continues to reckon with today.

Read the full history

Gold rushes from the 1850s drew migrants from around the world and made cities such as Melbourne suddenly rich. The six colonies federated into the Commonwealth of Australia on 1 January 1901. The world wars, especially the Gallipoli campaign of 1915, shaped a strong national identity, and after 1945 large-scale immigration from Europe and later Asia turned Australia into one of the most multicultural nations on the planet.

Modern Australia is a prosperous democracy that has made steps toward reconciliation, including the 2008 national apology to the Stolen Generations. For visitors, history is everywhere: Aboriginal-guided walks at Uluru and Kakadu, convict sites in Tasmania and Sydney, gold-rush towns in Victoria and vibrant cities shaped by waves of migrants, all set against beaches, reefs, rainforests and the vast red Outback.

Australia🎒 Backpacking Australia – tips & hacks

Backpacker budget: about $70–100 a day

  • Hop-on hop-off buses and campervan relocation deals are classic budget ways to travel the east coast between Sydney and Cairns.
  • Kings Cross and Bondi in Sydney, St Kilda in Melbourne, Byron Bay and Airlie Beach are popular hostel hubs.
  • Supermarket shopping and hostel kitchens save a lot; free public barbecues in parks are perfect for cheap dinners.
  • Many working-holiday travellers fund their trip with fruit picking or hospitality jobs if their visa allows it.
  • Distances are huge – book flights early for long hops like Sydney to Uluru or Perth instead of trying to drive everything.
Australia🛡️ Safety & money in Australia

Stay safe

  • Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents are a serious hazard.
  • In the tropical north, obey crocodile warning signs and avoid swimming in rivers and estuaries, and watch for seasonal stingers in the sea.
  • The sun is fierce: wear sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses, and carry plenty of water in the Outback.
  • On remote drives, tell someone your route, carry extra fuel and water, and avoid driving at dusk when kangaroos are active.

Money

  • Cards and contactless payments are accepted almost everywhere, even for small purchases.
  • ATMs are widespread in towns, but carry some cash for remote areas and markets.
  • Tipping is not expected, though rounding up or leaving around 10 percent for great service in restaurants is appreciated.
