Timor-Leste📜 History of Timor-Leste

The story of Timor-Leste

The rugged island of Timor has been home to people for tens of thousands of years, and successive waves of Austronesian and Melanesian settlers gave Timor-Leste its rich mix of languages and clans. Local kingdoms ruled the mountains and valleys, linked by alliances, sacred houses and customary law, while traders from China, Java and the wider Malay world came for the island's fragrant sandalwood.

Portuguese merchants and Dominican friars arrived in the 16th century, first settling around Lifau in today's Oecusse enclave. The Dutch later took control of western Timor, and after long rivalry the two powers agreed on a border in the early 20th century that still divides the island. Portuguese Timor remained a remote colony built on sandalwood and, later, coffee. During the Second World War it was occupied by Japan, and local people supported Australian commandos fighting in the hills.

Read the full history

When Portugal began withdrawing from its colonies in 1974-75, Timorese leaders proclaimed independence on 28 November 1975, but Indonesia occupied the territory days later and incorporated it as a province. A long resistance followed. In 1999 a UN-organised referendum saw the population vote overwhelmingly for independence, and after a period of UN administration the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste was formally born on 20 May 2002, one of the world's newest nations. Since then the country has focused on building institutions, developing its economy and strengthening ties with its neighbours.

For travellers, Timor-Leste is a true frontier destination. Portuguese churches and colonial buildings stand in the capital Dili, traditional sacred houses dot the hills, and moving museums tell the story of the struggle for independence. Add near-empty beaches, some of the most biodiverse coral reefs on the planet and misty coffee-growing mountains, and you have a rewarding country for those who enjoy going off the beaten track.
