Liechtenstein📜 History of Liechtenstein

The story of Liechtenstein

People have lived in the Rhine Valley of present-day Liechtenstein since Neolithic times, with early settlements found on hills such as the Eschnerberg and Gutenberg. Celtic Rhaetians later inhabited the region, and from 15 BC it became part of the Roman province of Raetia; the remains of a Roman fort at Schaan and villas near Nendeln date from this period. After the fall of Rome, Alemannic tribes settled the area, and their Germanic dialect is still spoken today.

During the Middle Ages the territory belonged to the counties of Vaduz and the Lordship of Schellenberg, ruled by a succession of noble families. In 1699 and 1712 the wealthy Liechtenstein family, powerful Austrian nobles, bought Schellenberg and Vaduz. In 1719 the Holy Roman Emperor united the two lands as the Principality of Liechtenstein, named after the family. For more than a century the princes lived in Vienna and rarely visited their tiny domain.

Read the full history

Liechtenstein became sovereign in 1806 when Napoleon dissolved the Holy Roman Empire, and fully independent after the German Confederation broke up in 1866. Two years later it abolished its army. After the First World War, it turned from Austria toward Switzerland, signing a customs union in 1923 and adopting the Swiss franc. Prince Franz Joseph II became the first ruler to live permanently in Vaduz in 1938, and the country stayed neutral through the Second World War. Once a poor farming land, Liechtenstein transformed itself into one of the world's wealthiest nations through industry and finance, joining the UN in 1990 and the European Economic Area in 1995.

Today the principality is a constitutional monarchy where the prince retains real political powers, and a stable, prosperous Alpine state. Visitors can see the princely castle above Vaduz, medieval ruins on wooded hills, the princely art collections and well-marked trails crossing a country small enough to walk across in a day.
