Mozambique📜 History of Mozambique

The story of Mozambique

Mozambique's long Indian Ocean coastline has drawn people for thousands of years. Early hunter-gatherers were followed, from around the first centuries AD, by Bantu-speaking farmers who brought ironworking and agriculture. Along the coast, Swahili trading towns grew up, linking the interior's gold and ivory with Arab, Persian and Indian merchants who sailed the monsoon winds. Inland, the region traded with the great Zimbabwe-plateau kingdoms, including the Mutapa state.

In 1498 Vasco da Gama reached the coast on his way to India, and the Portuguese soon set up forts and trading posts. Ilha de Moçambique became the capital of Portuguese East Africa for centuries, its churches, palaces and fort built from coral stone. For a long period Portuguese control was limited mainly to the coast and the Zambezi valley, where large estates called prazos operated. The colonial economy also became tied to labour migration to neighbouring mines and plantations.

Read the full history

In the 20th century, Mozambicans organised to end colonial rule, and FRELIMO launched an armed independence struggle in 1964. Independence came in 1975 after a change of government in Portugal. A long civil conflict followed, ending with a peace agreement in 1992, after which the country held multiparty elections and rebuilt its tourism and economy. Mozambique joined the Commonwealth in 1995 despite never being a British colony.

For travellers, Mozambique is a tropical paradise of palm-fringed beaches, coral reefs, island archipelagos and a vibrant culture of marrabenta music, Portuguese-African cuisine and lively markets. The UNESCO-listed Ilha de Moçambique, the dhows of the Bazaruto Archipelago and the rebounding wildlife of Gorongosa National Park reveal the country's rich history and natural beauty.
