Malawi📜 History of Malawi

The story of Malawi

Malawi's highlands and lakeshore have a long human story. Early hunter-gatherers left rock paintings in the Chongoni hills, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Bantu-speaking farmers and ironworkers spread through the region over the first millennium AD. By around the fifteenth century the Maravi confederacy had emerged among Chewa-speaking peoples, and its name lives on in the modern country. Chewa secret societies also preserved the Gule Wamkulu masked dances, still performed today.

In the nineteenth century the region was reshaped by newcomers: Ngoni groups migrated from southern Africa, and Yao traders became involved in the ivory and slave trades linked to the Indian Ocean coast. The Scottish explorer David Livingstone reached Lake Malawi in 1859, and missions followed at Blantyre and Livingstonia. Britain declared a protectorate in 1891, later named Nyasaland, and it was briefly joined with the Rhodesias in a federation from 1953 to 1963. Resistance to colonial rule included the 1915 uprising led by the pastor John Chilembwe, remembered today as a national hero.

Read the full history

Malawi became independent on 6 July 1964 under Hastings Kamuzu Banda and a republic two years later. For three decades the country was a one-party state, until a referendum in 1993 opened the way to multiparty elections the following year. The capital moved from colonial Zomba to the planned city of Lilongwe in 1975. Agriculture, especially tobacco, tea and sugar, remains the backbone of the economy.

Known as 'the Warm Heart of Africa' for the friendliness of its people, Malawi is a relaxed and rewarding destination. Visitors come for Lake Malawi, a vast freshwater lake teeming with colourful cichlid fish, revived wildlife parks such as Liwonde and Majete, the misty Zomba and Nyika plateaus, and the granite massif of Mount Mulanje, alongside village life, markets and music.
