Comoros📜 History of Comoros

The story of Comoros

The Comoros archipelago, scattered across the northern Mozambique Channel between Madagascar and the African mainland, was settled during the first millennium AD by seafaring peoples from Africa and, likely, Austronesian voyagers linked to the settlement of Madagascar. Arab and Persian traders arrived over the following centuries, and Islam took deep root. The islands became part of the Swahili trading world, exchanging spices, ivory and enslaved people across the Indian Ocean.

By the 15th and 16th centuries, local sultanates – often attributed to Shirazi lineages – ruled walled towns such as Mutsamudu on Anjouan and Iconi on Grande Comore. Rival sultans competed for power, and the islands were raided by fleets from Madagascar. European ships used the islands as a stopping point on routes to India, but colonial control came later.

Read the full history

France took Mayotte in 1841 and placed the other islands under protectorate status in 1886, turning much land into plantations of vanilla, cloves and ylang-ylang, whose scent still drifts through the countryside. In 1974 a referendum was held, and on 6 July 1975 the Comoros declared independence; Mayotte voted to remain French, a disagreement that continues. The young nation went through a long period of political instability, including several coups and the secession attempts of Anjouan and Mohéli in 1997.

A 2001 constitution created the Union of the Comoros, giving each island considerable autonomy. Today, the country remains one of the least-visited in Africa, which is part of its charm. Travellers find old stone medinas, Friday mosques, the active Karthala volcano, coral reefs, nesting turtles and a Comorian culture blending African, Arab and French influences, with the elaborate 'grand mariage' wedding at its social heart.
