Vatican City📜 History of Vatican City

The story of Vatican City

The world's smallest country has one of its longest stories. In ancient Rome, the Vatican Hill lay outside the city walls, an area of gardens, villas and a circus built by the emperors Caligula and Nero. Christian tradition holds that the apostle Peter was martyred here and buried in a nearby cemetery, and in the fourth century Emperor Constantine built a great basilica over the site, making it one of the holiest places in Christianity.

For centuries popes ruled not only the Church but also the Papal States, a large territory across central Italy. During the Renaissance, popes commissioned some of history's most celebrated artists. The old basilica was replaced by the new St Peter's Basilica, begun in 1506 and shaped by Bramante, Michelangelo and others, while Michelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel ceiling and Raphael decorated the papal apartments. Bernini later designed the sweeping colonnade of St Peter's Square.

Read the full history

In 1870 the newly unified Kingdom of Italy captured Rome, ending the Papal States, and the popes considered themselves prisoners within the Vatican for nearly sixty years. The dispute was settled in 1929 with the Lateran Treaty, which created Vatican City as an independent state. Today it is governed by the pope as head of the Holy See, protected by the colourful Swiss Guard, and has its own post office, stamps, radio station and newspaper.

For visitors, Vatican City is an extraordinary concentration of art, faith and history in a compact area. Millions come to see the Sistine Chapel, the vast collections of the Vatican Museums and the soaring dome of St Peter's, or to attend a papal audience or Mass. The whole state is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and even non-religious travellers find the experience deeply moving.
