Sierra Leone📜 History of Sierra Leone

The story of Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone's green hills, rainforests and long Atlantic beaches have been home to people for thousands of years. Over centuries, peoples such as the Temne, Mende, Limba, Kono and Sherbro settled the land, farming rice, fishing the rivers and coast and building chiefdoms with strong secret societies that guided law, education and ceremony. Many of these traditions, including the masked dances of the Sande and Poro societies, remain important today.

In 1462 the Portuguese explorer Pedro de Sintra sailed along the coast and named the mountainous peninsula 'Serra Leoa', or Lion Mountains. Over the following centuries the area was drawn into the transatlantic slave trade, and Bunce Island in the Sierra Leone River became one of the key British slave-trading forts in West Africa, sending captives to the Americas, notably to the rice plantations of South Carolina and Georgia.

Read the full history

In 1787 British abolitionists founded a settlement for formerly enslaved people, and in 1792 Black Loyalists from Nova Scotia established Freetown. They were later joined by Jamaican Maroons and tens of thousands of 'Liberated Africans' freed from slave ships by the Royal Navy. Their descendants, the Krio, developed a distinctive culture and language. Freetown became a British colony in 1808, the interior was declared a protectorate in 1896, and Fourah Bay College made the city an early centre of education in West Africa. Sierra Leone became independent in 1961.

The decades after independence brought political turmoil and a devastating civil war in the 1990s, which ended in 2002. Since then the country has rebuilt with remarkable resilience, holding peaceful elections and recovering from the Ebola outbreak of 2014 to 2016. For visitors today, Sierra Leone offers uncrowded white-sand beaches, chimpanzee sanctuaries, rainforest reserves and a vibrant capital where the Cotton Tree, Bunce Island and Krio culture tell a powerful story of freedom and renewal.
