Macau📜 History of Macau

The story of Macau

Before the Portuguese came, the small peninsula at the mouth of the Pearl River was a modest place of fishing villages and farms within the Chinese empire. Local seafarers honoured A-Ma, goddess of sailors, at a temple by the harbour, and according to tradition the name Macau comes from 'A-Ma-Gau', the bay of A-Ma.

Portuguese traders, who had reached southern China in the early 16th century, were allowed to settle in Macau around 1557. It quickly became a crucial hub linking Lisbon, Goa, Malacca, Nagasaki and Manila, as silk, silver, spices and porcelain flowed through its port. Jesuit missionaries used it as a base for China and Japan, building churches such as the Church of St Paul, whose stone façade survives. Over the centuries a distinctive Macanese community emerged, blending Portuguese, Chinese, Malay and Indian influences in its language and cuisine.

Read the full history

In the 19th century, after Hong Kong was founded as a British colony and drew away much of the trade, Macau's fortunes declined, and Portugal asserted fuller control over the territory. It became known for fan-tan houses, opium and a sleepy colonial charm, and during the Second World War it remained neutral, sheltering many refugees. Legalised gambling became a mainstay of the economy in the 20th century. Following negotiations between Portugal and China, Macau was handed over on 20 December 1999 and became a Special Administrative Region of China, ending more than four centuries of Portuguese administration. Its casino sector later expanded dramatically, especially on the reclaimed Cotai strip.

For visitors, Macau's charm lies in its contrasts. Its Historic Centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, mixes Baroque churches, Portuguese squares paved with wave-patterned stones and Chinese temples, while village lanes in Taipa and Coloane, Macanese dishes and glittering resort towers sit side by side.
