Kiribati📜 History of Kiribati

The story of Kiribati

The atolls of Kiribati were settled by Micronesian voyagers at least two thousand years ago, and later contact with Samoa and other Polynesian islands influenced local traditions. The I-Kiribati developed a society perfectly adapted to life on narrow coral islands with little soil and fresh water, growing giant swamp taro in pits, harvesting coconuts and pandanus, and becoming expert fishermen and navigators. Communities gathered in the maneaba, a great open-sided meeting house that remains the heart of village life today, and warriors wore distinctive armour woven from coconut fibre.

European explorers passed through from the sixteenth century, and in the 1800s whalers, traders and missionaries arrived. Many islanders were taken to work on plantations abroad through the 'blackbirding' labour trade. Britain declared a protectorate over the Gilbert Islands in 1892, later joined by the Ellice Islands (now Tuvalu) to form the Gilbert and Ellice Islands colony. Phosphate mining on Banaba transformed that island and displaced much of its population.

Read the full history

During the Second World War Japan occupied the Gilberts, and in November 1943 US forces landed on Tarawa in one of the Pacific War's most intense battles; rusting guns and bunkers still lie on the atoll. After the war the Ellice Islands separated to become Tuvalu, and the Gilberts became independent as the Republic of Kiribati on 12 July 1979. In 1995 Kiribati moved the International Date Line so that the whole country shares the same calendar day, making its eastern Line Islands among the first places on Earth to greet each new day.

Today Kiribati is a nation of 33 atolls and islands spread across a vast area of ocean, and is on the front line of rising sea levels. For the few travellers who make it here, the rewards are warm hospitality, traditional dancing and maneaba culture, World War II relics on Tarawa, and some of the best bonefishing and birdlife on the planet around Kiritimati (Christmas Island).
