United Reminds Flight Attendants Not to Use Free Pass Travel While on Sick Leave

United told its roughly 30,000 flight attendants that sick leave and leisure trips don't mix, but the crew union says its contract allows such travel.

United Airlines told its almost 30,000 flight attendants again that employees who are sick and unable to work should not use their free or discounted standby staff tickets for vacation trips. These perks let employees fly for free on standby. The reminder was sent in an internal memo, according to Paddle Your Own Kanoo.

The same news outlet said the memo warned that employees who fly while on sick leave might be punished by the company. It also said anyone planning a vacation while on sick leave should first get approval from a line manager. View from the Wing said the airline wants to avoid staffing problems on flights.

The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, which represents United's cabin crew, disagrees. It says the contract does not ban travel during sick leave and that crew do not need a manager's permission. According to View from the Wing, the union has a strong contract case against a blanket ban, though that does not mean crew may call in sick improperly.

What it means for travelers

This is a workplace dispute between an airline and its crew, and the notes do not say it changes anything for ticketed passengers. It does show that airlines are paying attention to how staff travel benefits connect to flight staffing. Travelers should not expect changes to their own bookings based on these reports.

What to watch next

The notes do not say how the disagreement will be resolved. Watch for any update from United or the union.
